Abstract

Kampung Asbaken in Distrik Makbon, Kabupaten Sorong, faces recurring landslide risks due to steep topography, high rainfall, uncontrolled land clearing, and sparse deep-rooted vegetation. Compounding this vulnerability, local disaster literacy is limited, and the partner group, Komunitas Peduli Lingkungan Kampung Asbaken, lacks formal organizational structures and standard operating procedures (SOPs). This community engagement initiative aimed to enhance community-based landslide mitigation and strengthen local institutional capacity through training, participatory risk mapping, slope bioengineering, and evacuation-route marking. Involving 25 partner members and 30 residents across three workshops, the program evaluated knowledge gains using a 30-item pretest-posttest instrument. The mean knowledge score increased by 78.6%, rising from 48.7 (SD = 9.8) to 87.0 (SD = 6.9), while passing rates (score ≥ 70) improved from 20.0% to 90.0% (paired t = 17.4, p < .001). The partner group also formalized its organizational structure and mitigation SOPs. These results show that participatory education integrated with vegetative conservation and institutional capacity building effectively enhances rural disaster resilience.
